Retail Operations

Our Operations Graduate Program is a two year, fast paced program setting you up to become Store Manager, which is just the start of your leadership journey at Coles!  Beyond Store Manager you have the potential to lead a region, market or even a state. You may even be our next Managing Director. 

Year one of the program is all about customers and fresh food! So, graduates will be doing things like accompanied customer shops, real customer listening sessions, supplier visits and much more! This is all critical in helping to understand how to deliver the best experience for our customers and driving success in key categories. Grads will also be required to champion change and lead departments with real commercial targets. 

  

Year two is then all about people and commercial leadership. They’ll be supported in building these skills through professional training and development sessions but most importantly, through continued hands on experience. Graduates will be leading larger teams and have responsibility for much larger departments. They’ll also get the opportunity to participate in a major project and complete a four day residential leadership program towards the end of their graduate journey

Coles Express Operations

The Coles Express Operations Graduate Program is an accelerated leadership development program where you will be challenged, supported and coached to develop into an exceptional leader within the fast paced world of convenience retailing. As a Coles Express Graduate, you will gain extensive operational skills and knowledge by working with senior business leaders such as our Retail Area Managers, Regional HR Managers, State Managers and Central Operations team.

 

During the two year program you will learn everything you need to know to land as a Coles Express Retail Area Manager! Opportunities are available in VIC, NSW, QLD and WA.

Distribution Centre Operations

The Coles DC Graduate Program places you at the heart of our supply chain, ensuring thousands of products get to hundreds of customers every single day. From picking to planning and inventory management, our DC Graduates not only get the operational skills they need to be great managers in our DCs, but also all the experiences needed to become brilliant people leaders of big teams that put our stores and customers first.

At the end of this two year program, you will be on track to landing a Senior Operational Leadership position. The DC graduate program is offered in all states except VIC and TAS.

Becoming an Operations Graduate at Coles is much more than just learning how to stack shelves better. It is about learning how to lead and manage a multi-million dollar business serving thousands of customers a day. Not only is the program setting Graduates up for success now, they are being equipped with the skills they will need to be a senior leader of the future within the business.

I love the Retail Graduate Program because it is extremely fast paced! In six months I have had the opportunity to lead the Grocery, Deli and Bakery teams across a number of different stores, as well as spending time working with the Fresh Produce, Dairy, Meat and Service teams. One of the great things about Coles is that there are endless and different opportunities emerging all the time. I started on the program in 2015, with the hope of becoming a Store Manager in 2 years’ time. Having already worked in stores for 5 years, after only 9 months on the program, my managers saw potential in me and I have now been appointed to Store Manager early!

Without the knowledge, support and experiences I was offered on the Graduate Program, I don’t believe I would have had this opportunity offered to me so soon. I would highly recommend applying for the program if you are someone who loves to be challenged, as Coles will definitely stretch, develop and accelerate your career!

I applied for the Operations Graduate Program because I was already a team member at Coles and I wanted to stay with the business after completing my degree. The program gave me the opportunity to not only stay with Coles and satisfy my passion for retail, but it has also helped to develop me and advance my career.
 

My experience on the Program so far has been great! I grew up in a regional town, so moving to Melbourne was a challenge. However, everyone I have worked with so far has really helped me to settle in. I may have only been on the program for 6 months, but I believe I have learnt far more than I would have in any other business!

 

I have already worked across all fresh departments and my Store Manager has been by my side the entire time, helping me to learn the necessary skills to become a Store Manager at the end of my program. However, I know this isn’t the end of the road in terms of opportunities at Coles, and in 5 years’ time, I will be working towards becoming a Regional Manager  or moving into the Store Support Centre to continue to advance my career in other areas of the business.

 

My advice is that if you love working with people and you love to be challenged, then there is nothing like working towards becoming a Store manager on the Coles Operations Graduate Program. You can lead a team of your own and help us pave the way to becoming Australia’s best supermarket retailer!

I grew up in Venezuela and completed all my studies there too. Moving to Australia was always going to come with its challenges; however, joining the Coles Operations Graduate Program has been fantastic and the level of  support I have received from everyone involved has been amazing. Everyone around me has offered their support right from the application process through to now.

What encouraged me to apply for the Coles Graduate Program was the opportunity to develop my professional skills in retail in order to become a successful leader in the company. The program is so well structured in the way that we have endless opportunities to network with other graduates, managers, store based mentors and other leaders in the business. I have all the help around me that I need to develop my leadership skills for my future career as a leader in Coles! In the years to come I see myself as a highly successful store manager, leading a great team of people.

The biggest thing I have learnt from Coles so far is that it is important to be yourself, as Coles promotes diversity and believes that it is our individual differences that make us such a great team!

The Coles Retail and DC Graduate Programs are unique operational leadership programs, giving you real commercial accountability and leading teams between 5 and 100 people. Over the two year program, you’ll be supported with professional training and development workshops and real experiences that set you up for success as leader in retail or supply chain operations at Coles when you complete the program.
