On 5 June we advised that Coles was among a number of large Australian organisations who suspended connections with human resources technology provider PageUp, after they confirmed that an unauthorised person gained access to PageUp systems and personal data relating to clients, job applicants, references and PageUp employees.

Coles, which uses PageUp to manage job applications and candidate information, has suspended all connections between Coles’ systems and PageUp’s systems and stopped all available points of upload.

Coles takes data security very seriously. We have now received written assurances from PageUp and their independent external security experts Klein & Co and Content Security that:

  • The original threat has been removed;
  • No further security issues have been identified on the PageUp system;
  • The PageUp system is safe to use; and
  • Further security measures have been implemented to help guard against a similar incident in the future.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) and IDCARE has also issued a joint statement on the PageUp incident.

On this basis, Coles has determined to reinstate the Coles career website using the PageUp system. If you have recently submitted an application, the recruitment team will be in touch shortly.

Coles is not aware that any of our team members’ or job applicants’ data has been specifically affected. Nor are we aware of any fraudulent activity relating to anyone’s data occurring as a result of the security breach.

However, we recommend that any person who has applied online for a position with Coles check to ensure that there has been no recent unusual activity concerning their personal information and maintain a close watch on the use of their personal information.
